You will have to "rip" the videos from the physical disk to save them to the NAS. can't comment on the other brands, but the QNAP interface can be daunting if you are not technically savvyģ. I like QNAP, but Synology and ASUStor are very good.Ģ. A 4TB NAS will only store about 140 uncompressed MKV files or a few hundred compressed files with nothing else on it.ġ. I also started using the NAS as a DLNA streaming device, storing all my music and movies which wiped out the storage space. I thought the four bay NAS would suffice, but once you start using a NAS, you will backup EVERYTHING to it. a Six bay NAS with six 4TB HDD will give you 18TB space (A RAID 5 uses one drive's capacity as a striping drive for redundancy.) A four bay NAS with four 4TB HDD will give you only 10TB storage. Read our full Qnap TS-451+ review for more information. The drawback is that if you use all four bays and you need to expand, you will have to buy four all new higher capacity drives (I expanded from four 4TB HDD to 4 6TB HDD and it set me back another $1000). If you can't buy the six or eight-bay, this will suffice. If you need to increase capacity, just pop in another drive and you are good to go. You can just buy three drives and set it up in a RAID 5. As a storage device, its also file-level rather than block-level (you cannot ask the device for only a small piece of a file, you have to take/put the whole file at once), which means you cant have concurrent access from multiple sources.

I know that the six and eight bays are more expensive ($760 and $900 respectively), but they are a lot more cost effective thann the two or four bays NAS. Your NAS is a dumb storage device, not a server capable of hosting a piece of software like SQL. You want to configure it in RAID 5 which means if one drive fails, you still have your data. I would strongly suggest you look at a six- or eight- bay NAS.

Will the NAS be able to access and download my current digital media online right now? I have movies on Google Play and Flixster, which uses UltraViolet. I dabble in photography, so I also hope to store RAW images on the NAS and be able to access them with Lightroom. I'll probably mkv all my DVDs/Blurays and backup the lossless on an external drive, while putting compressed versions on the NAS. I'm a beginner and looking to keep cost low and ease of use high. My concern here (1) bay size and (2) playback quality. My need for the NAS is to store and playback photos, music, and videos. Here's my plan and the parts where I'm indecisive. I figured this would be a good place to start. I'm moving to a new house and want to get my setup verified by enthusiasts as to what I plan to do.
